AUTUMN CAMPING | Experience autumn outdoors

You unzip your tent and see the morning mist still hanging low between the trees. The air is crisp, the summer crowds have gone and being outside suddenly feels different.

As the days grow shorter, spending a few days outdoors can feel especially good.

AUTUMN CAMPING, YOUR WAY

There are many ways to camp in autumn: on a campsite surrounded by nature, with a campervan or rooftop tent, or in a safari tent, yurt or glamping pod.

What do they all have in common? The outdoors takes centre stage. You notice the colder mornings, watch the landscape change and retreat somewhere warm in the evening.

Want to wake up among trees turning red and gold? Head for the forest. Prefer to keep moving? Make the journey part of the trip. Or choose somewhere you can step straight from your accommodation into nature.

A FEW DAYS AMONG THE TREES

Forests take on a completely different character in autumn. Leaves change colour, everything becomes quieter and crisp mornings make returning somewhere warm all the more inviting.

HerfstOord — the Netherlands

From 12 to 26 October, De Lievelinge transforms into HerfstOord, with woodland walks, workshops, a sauna, live music, an autumn market and food around the fire.

Here, autumn isn’t something you camp through despite the weather. It’s the reason to go.

Prefer somewhere quieter? Het Bos Roept in North Holland welcomes tents, campervans and caravans all year round, alongside eco cabins, tipi tents and woodland houses.

Éislek — Luxembourg

In northern Luxembourg, forests, hills and the Upper Sûre Lake create a landscape that naturally draws you outside. Several walking routes start directly from Camping Liefrange. Camping and campervan pitches are available all year round, while rental accommodation is available until the end of October.

There on 11 October 2026? Veiner Nëssmoort in Vianden is worth a detour. The traditional walnut market dates back to 1935 and celebrates the walnut harvest with fresh nuts, pastries and Nëssdrëpp, the local walnut spirit.

ON THE ROAD THROUGH THE AUTUMN LANDSCAPE

With a campervan, rooftop tent or tent in the boot, the journey itself becomes part of the trip.

Black Forest & Alsace — Germany and France

Forests, lakes and small villages make the Black Forest particularly appealing in autumn. Combine it with Baden or Alsace, where Neier Siasser is served from late September: young, still-cloudy wine traditionally enjoyed with bread, cheese, charcuterie, grapes and fresh walnuts.

Vosges — France

Forests, mountain lakes and walking trails also make the Vosges worth exploring in autumn. Along the way, you’ll find fermes-auberges: farm inns serving food made with produce from the surrounding area.

After a crisp autumn walk, sit down for a repas marcaire, a hearty traditional mountain meal, often featuring local Munster cheese and blueberry tart to finish.

AUTUMN CAMPING IN SCOTLAND

For a wilder autumn experience, head to the Highlands, Perthshire or the area around Loch Lomond. Stay in a tent or campervan, choose a glamping pod or spend a few nights on a farm.

Look beyond the landscape and you’ll also discover a rich textile tradition. Waulking, the traditional hand-finishing of woven tweed, was historically carried out by groups of women and often accompanied by song. These waulking songs offer a glimpse into the women and communities behind the craft.

MAKE THE OUTDOORS PART OF THE JOURNEY

Bring your camera, pack a book or sketchbook, or pick up ingredients from a local market and cook for yourself. Take a look at what is happening around your campsite or along your route too. You might find a farm shop, special bakery, winery or local maker nearby.

Not as a checklist, but as a reason to stay somewhere a little longer.
